The Media Acc ess Control (MAC) address is a unique

number assigned by t he manufac turer t o any E ther net

allows the networ k to identify it at the hardware level.

For all practical purposes , this number is us uall y

permanent. Unlike I P address es, whic h can c hange

ever y time a computer l ogs on to t he net wor k, t he MAC

address of a de vice stays the same, making it a

val uable identifi er for the net work.
